Previous activities
Regretfully, the
ISA Montreal Section Board has had to decide to cancel the 60th
anniversary celebration dinner, planned for Friday, November 7, at Exporail, the
Canadian Railway Museum. One week before the event, the number of confirmed
attendees (18) is too few to run the event without incurring a substantial
financial loss for the Section.
Join us on Thursday, April 24, for a round table on machine safety. Three champions of machine safety will present their experiences and viewpoints, answer questions, and engage in discussions on this important and current topic. Our champions are:
Alain Brassard, Roche Cadec Richard Martel, Cascades James Bouchard, Johnson & Johnson
We will start with sandwiches and coffee (free for ISA members, $10 for non members) at 5 PM. The presentations will start at 6 PM; each champion will talk for 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of questions. When all three have presented, all will answer more questions and engage in discussion as needed. The presentations will be in French, but at least two of the presenters can answer questions in English if needed.
All this will take place at École de technologie supérieure (ETS), 1100 Notre-Dame West, Montreal.
Mr. Rakaczky will give us an update on rapid developments in this field which is of crucial importance to anyone working with control and data acquisition systems, including: success factors and pitfalls for NERC CIP compliance; evolving requirements of U.S. Homeland Security and other government security agencies; the new ISA Security Compliance Institute and the ISASecure designation; new developments in the context of the ISA-99 standard.
Speaker Biography Ernest Rakaczky is currently the program director for Foxboro Invensys Process Control Security Team. In this position, Mr. Rakaczky manages overall development and implementation of the customer support infrastructure and services to meet today’s security needs. Mr. Rakaczky also participates in security initiatives in ISA (SP99), NIST (PCSRF), MSMUG and many other organizations.
Mr. Rakaczky has been active in the process control arena for over 28 years, always with a customer support focus. He joined the Invensys Foxboro team in 1995 after 18 years with ABB. He also served in the US Navy within the Advanced Electronics Program in both Satellite Communication and Cryptography.
The electricity picture in Quebec is very different from that of our neighbours. The special nature of the Quebec electricity market is apparent in production, distribution, and usage; Quebec is the only place that uses electricity on a large scale for residential heating and it contains 90% of aluminium production in Canada. The characteristics of various energy sources (hydroelectric, nuclear, thermal, wind, energy conservation) that together can ensure our energy future will be explored.
Speaker Biography Claude Demers has worked at Hydro-Quebec since 1980. He is currently a scientific communicator in the public relations department and recently worked also with Ouranos, a research consortium on regional climatology and climate change.
He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical geography from the University of Montreal and Laval University.
He has carried out numerous environmental studies in all parts of Quebec and in Labrador. For a number of years, he was responsible for the multidisciplinary environmental monitoring program at the La Grande complex. He was also the coordinator for the report "Synthèse des connaissances environnementales acquises en milieu nordique de 1970 à 2000" (Summary of environmental knowledge acquired in Nordic environments from 1970 to 2000).
Mr. Demers has served as a project administrator for Hydro-Quebec International and has also participated in the planning of electricity production in Quebec.
This presentation will describe the "SiteSell" continuing education course at Dawson College. Developed last year in collaboration with Dawson, the course is now being offered in 20 colleges and universities worldwide.
In a structured classroom setting, the course handholds you through all the proven steps of building an online business. At the end of 10 weekly classes of three hours, you get all the training and services needed for you to leave with a new Internet business or a much improved existing one.
The presentation will feature: a) examples and opportunities for practitioners in automation and control; b) proven strategies suppliers can use to boost online sales and lead generation and qualification; c) ways to create lifetime residual income; d) do-it-yourself (DIY) and do-it-for-me (DIFM) options.
As a special treat for ISA members, Don will also highlight some of the contributions to Internet business savvy made by an ISA colleague who has become one of the most highly respected gurus of doing business online. Accompanying Don will be Nadia Bissada, Director of Dawson's Centre for Training and Development, which helped pioneer the rapidly expanding "SiteSell" course.
Speaker Biography A McGill Engineering graduate, Don Coggan has been an Internet Business Consultant since 1996, following a long career in engineering management. He is also a Director of SiteSell Education for whom he co-developed a 10-week college course that brings the entrepreneur-student from zero to having an operating online business right in the classroom.
Don's time in engineering focused on automation and control. Still a member of ISA, Don edited the flagship "Fundamentals of Industrial Control" volume of ISA's Practical Guide series as well as training manuals for ISA's Certified Control Systems Technician Program. He has authored dozens of technical articles and developed training software and programs.
Want to be an astronaut for an afternoon? Come
visit the facilities of the Canadian Space Agency in St-Hubert. The CSA (www.space.gc.ca)
was founded in 1989 to promote Canada’s space program and to carry out
cutting-edge research in various fields related to the exploration and use of
space, including robotics, remote sensing, satellite communications, advanced
materials, and many others. Each of the two groups (one in English, one in French) will visit the robotics lab and attend technical presentations on the agency’s activities.
